FEDERAL WAY, Wash. – California senior Reece Whitley was named the 2022 Pac-12 Men's Swimming & Diving Scholar-Athlete of the Year on Friday, the conference office announced at its championship meet.
 
As a national champion, Pac-12 champion and scholar All-American, Whitley has defined success as a student-athlete throughout his four-year collegiate career with the Golden Bears. Whitley has earned 14 CSCAA All-America honors through his first three seasons and is a nine-time Pac-12 champion – as of March 3 – having won four individual titles and five relay events while serving as a critical piece of Cal's three straight conference team championships from 2019-21.
 
Whitley was the 2019 Pac-12 Swimming Freshman of the Year and a four-time finalist (two individual) in Cal's run to the 2019 NCAA team championship. At his second NCAA meet in 2021, he earned two top-three finishes in the 100-yard breaststroke (third) and the 200 breast (runner-up).
 
Whitley owns three Cal school records in the 100 breast, 200 breast and 400 medley relay.
 
The Lafayette Hill, Pennsylvania native is a three-time CSCAA Scholar All-American and has been selected to the Pac-12 Winter Academic Honor Roll twice so far in his time at Cal. As a business administration major, Whitley was selected to represent the prestigious Haas School of Business at the National Diversity Case Competition earlier this year and serves as a council member of USA Swimming's Black Leadership in Aquatics Coalition (Team BLAC).
 
To be eligible for the Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year honor, a student-athlete must be a senior or graduate student in his final year of eligibility, have spent at least one year in residence at his institution and have maintained a 3.00 grade point average or higher.
