Durden Named Acting Director Of Swimming & Diving

Five-Time NCAA Champion To Oversee Cal's Men's And Women's Programs

David Durden, the head coach of Cal's men's swimming & diving program for the past 15 seasons and winner of five NCAA championships, will serve as the Acting Director of Swimming & Diving for both the men's and women's programs at Cal.

This summer, both the men's and women's swimming program have been training and competing together under the USA Swimming Club, Cal Aquatics.

Durden will oversee both programs with Matt Bowe serving as associate head coach for the men's swimming program, David Marsh serving as the associate head coach of the women's swimming program, and Jesse Moore serving as an assistant coach for both programs.

"Our men and women have been working together this summer and it has allowed my mind to think about all of the possibilities as we charge towards Paris 2024," Durden said. "To have David Marsh and his knowledge on the deck with us is such a positive for both our men and women, and working with Matt and Jesse over these last several weeks has helped me put a framework around this concept moving forward."

Bowe served in a similar role at Ohio State before accepting the assistant men's position in Berkeley in May, while Moore continues in his capacity as assistant coach after serving as the head coach for both the men and women at Dartmouth during the 2021-2022 year.

Marsh returns to Berkeley after helping Cal's men's program from February through April while Chase Kreitler was on paternity leave. Marsh has held several roles since leading the Auburn men's and women's swimming programs to 12 national titles as the head coach from 1990-2007. In addition to his collegiate stops, Marsh served as the head coach of Team USA's Olympic women's team in 2016.

"I thoroughly enjoyed working with Dave and the Golden Bears last season, and I'm honored and excited to assist in the process of helping develop world class people and world class swimmers," Marsh said. "With Coach Durden's vision, I'm 100% sure the men and women of Berkeley have a fantastic future. Go Bears!"
