REDWOOD CITY – The Cal men's rowing team capped off a perfect and productive weekend with a sweep of Stanford on Sunday in the annual Big Row on Redwood Shores.

The Bears' top two boats registered a pair of substantial victories, with their varsity eight defeating the Cardinal by almost seven seconds. Cal's second varsity eight had an even bigger win, outdistancing Stanford's second boat by over 13 seconds.

In races against Santa Clara, Oregon State and Stanford over the weekend, the Bears went undefeated.

"Getting to look at different lineups was positive and productive for us," Cal head coach Scott Frandsen said. "I think it gives us a better idea, but we have a lot to figure out over the next couple days and really the next couple weeks."

As the Bears continue to get a few key rowers back from injury, Frandsen continues to tinker with boat lineups to make sure Cal can reach its full potential with the meat of the spring season coming quickly. Cal visits Washington next weekend for the important Windemere Cup, followed by the Pac-12 Championships and IRA national championships.

Senior Brett Cataldo continues to cox the varsity eight with veterans such as George Finlayson, Jack Robertson and Matthew Mesman in the boat.

"We're excited about (racing Washington) and we will use that as we continue to build toward IRAs," Frandsen said. "This is a very important weekend based off how the spring has gone. There have been more ups and downs this season, and we just need to continue to build over the next five weeks for IRAs."
