Cal Rounds Out NCAA Qualifying Group With Five Additions

The Bears Will Send A Total Of Twelve Athletes To Nationals

Final Results

FAYETTEVILLE, ARKANSAS –
California track & field finished a successful four days of competition at the NCAA West Region Preliminary on Saturday, qualifying five more athletes to the upcoming NCAA Championships. The Bears will field 12 competitors at collegiate track & field's premier meet, with decathlete Hakim McMorris joining the 11 qualifiers from this week in Eugene, Oregon in two weeks' time.

"This meet was a lot of fun," said Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Robyne Johnson. "Our hard work is paying off. We're just really happy to have the opportunity to represent California at the National Championships. It's been quite the year."

In the day's second event, the women's 4x100m relay team, composed of Jada Hicks, Ezinne Abba, Maisie Stevens, and Aysha Shaheed blazed to a time of 44.03 – just 0.04 seconds off of their own school record – to finish sixth in the field and stamp their ticket to Nationals. Abba followed that performance up with a wind-aided time of 10.95 in the 100m dash, good for fifth place and a new personal best. She will be the Bears' lone athlete to compete in more than one event at Eugene.

Cal entered multiple athletes in the women's triple jump, one of the team's strongest events of the season. Sophomore Busola Akinduro raised eyebrows with a massive wind-aided PR of 13.22m (43-4.5), earning her the final qualifying spot in the field. She also posted a wind-legal jump of 13.17m (43-2.5), which bettered her own No. 8 mark in program history. Teammate Felicia Renelus also made her way onto Cal's Top 10 list, despite not qualifying for the NCAA Championships; her best wind-legal mark of 12.96m (42-6.25) was enough to claim the Bears' all-time No. 10 spot.

Johnson, for her part, could not say enough about the team's performance. "This is the way you have to do it – get those PR's, those records," she said. "I'm so proud of these kids for working hard and making it through – this just really makes all of us happy,"
