King Named Pac-12 Pitcher Of The Week
Junior Right-Hander Silenced No. 10 Florida State On Sunday
SAN FRANCISCO – California junior
Joseph King was named the Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week following a standout performance against No. 10 Florida State on Sunday, the conference office announced Monday afternoon.
Â
Despite not earning the decision, King played a critical role in Cal's 5-3 extra-inning road win as he went toe-to-toe with FSU starter Ross Dunn over the first half of the contest. The right-hander struck out a career-high seven batters and retired 14 batters in a row during his 5.0 scoreless innings pitched, while allowing just two singles.
Â
Cal's bats broke through late, tallying five runs from the seventh inning on, including a pair in the 10th that sealed the series-ending victory.
Â
It is the first Pac-12 honor of King's career. The Redwood City, California, native was a 2020 Freshman All-American (
Collegiate Baseball Newspaper) and owns a career 2.90 ERA in 31 innings pitched. King is in his first season as a weekend starter after serving as the Bears' closer in 2020 and 2021. He missed the bulk of the 2021 campaign due to injury.
