GOLD RIVER – The Cal men's rowing team took second place at the 2021 Pac-12 Championships on Sunday on Lake Natoma.

The Bears took second to eventual champion Washington in each of its three varsity races. Cal fell to the Huskies by 4.5 seconds in the varsity eight race.

The Bears' second varsity eight boat fell to the Huskies by 6.4 seconds and their third varsity eight lost by 2.2 seconds.

"The guys are disappointed. We're here to win," Cal head coach Scott Frandsen said. "That's the goal every single race, every single day that we train. They're driven, and they'll use it to fuel the next 12 days."

Cal should receive a bid to the IRA national championships when they are awarded on Tuesday.

The deficit against the Huskies in the varsity eight was almost exactly the same as when the crews met two weeks ago in Seattle.

"We definitely got faster, so obviously so did they," Frandsen said. "They've got a really good program and I have tons of respect for their athletes and their coaches. But I love my guys and we have two weeks to find some speed, and I know it's there. This has been a year of challenges, but the attitude, the resilience and the persistence that these guys have shown is incredible."
