Danny Barrett Home At Rugby World Cup 7s
Great Golden Bear Credits Cal For Success
BERKELEY – On Friday, when 40 teams from 28 nations converge on AT&T Park in San Francisco for the 2018 Rugby World Cup 7s, with 84 matches played over three days in front of over 100,000 fans and a worldwide television audience, one man will be making a homecoming to his childhood stomping grounds of Pacifica, Calif., and his alma mater, the University of California.
Danny Barrett graduated as a great Golden Bear in 2013 with national championships in both 7s and 15s to go with four All-America honors. Over the ensuing five years, the 6-2, 225-pound forward who went to high school in San Francisco and arrived at Cal as the youngest of three brothers to play for the Rugby Bears has matured into one of the most accomplished international rugby players in the United States.
According to Barrett, significant credit for his success goes to the Cal rugby program, led by head coach
Jack Clark and associate head coach
Tom Billups.
"It's something Coach Clark and Coach Billups have ingrained in a lot of people," Barrett said of his work ethic and the opportunity it has created for success. "Just as much as they grow rugby players and athletes, their biggest mission is to grow men that can succeed in society. Roll your sleeves up, get your hands dirty and get the job done. That's what they are all about."
Since finishing his Cal career with the team's first 7s title in 2013 and playing for the United States at the 2015 Rugby World Cup, Barrett has been a beast on the World Series circuit playing the 7s form of rugby that returned as an Olympic Sport to the 2016 Summer Games in Rio. It was there that Barrett became the first rugby Olympian from the University since the USA won gold at the last Olympics to include rugby, the 1924 Paris Games.
After an impressive showing at the Rio Olympics, Barrett went on to a dominant year on the World Series of Sevens, earning recognition as one of the best in the world with his selection to the 2017 World Rugby Sevens Dream Team. In 2018 he has continued to play a crucial role for the U.S. National 7s Team.
"Danny is an extraordinary global sporting talent," Clark said. "He would be an asset to every team in the world. The United States is fortunate to have him. As a collegian he was imposing, a great teammate and a national champion."
Everyone from Cal and the San Francisco Bay Area feels a special pride seeing Danny Barrett represent his country at the 2018 Rugby World Cup 7s, and wish the best of luck to the United States. Go Bears!
