Bears Get Revenge On Stanford With 5-3 Win

Cal Posts 10 Hits Against The Cardinal

STANFORD - Seeking revenge from the night before, California left nothing to chance in Saturday's non-conference rematch against Stanford. The Golden Bears posted five runs in the first three innings and defeated the Cardinal, 5-3, in the Stanford Invitational at Smith Family Stadium on Saturday.

Cal improved to 4-2 on the year, and the Bears completed play at the Stanford Invitational winners of three of their four contests on The Farm.

Making her first career start in her second collegiate appearance, Haylei Archer (1-0) was stingy in the circle against the Cardinal, earning the complete game win. Battling through pressure situations, Archer got out of a bases-loaded jam in the second inning with a strikeout to stop the rally. Archer allowed two earned runs on eight hits, no walks and she recorded three strikeouts.

The Bears got on the board first in the top of the second. Cal loaded the bases after back-to-back singles by Kennedy Thomas and Sophie Medellin to set the table. Cameron Kondo and Tatum Anzaldo posted consecutive RBI singles to put the Bears up, 2-0.

Cal's bats went back to work in the top of the third. After loading the bases for the second straight inning, Medellin smacked a line drive infield single to second that scored two and made it 4-0. Later in the inning, a sac fly by Anzaldo scored Thomas - her second run of the game - to make it 5-0.

Nine of Cal's 10 hits were singles.

Medellin finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Kondo also registered a pair of hits, including a double.

The originally scheduled game between Cal and Santa Clara tomorrow has been canceled. The Bears return to Stanford next week for a pair of games against BYU and UC Santa Barbara on Thursday, March 4, and Friday, March 5, before hosting the Gauchos on Saturday, March 6, and Nevada on Sunday, March 7, from Levine-Fricke Field. Due to public health guidelines, fans are not allowed to attend home games.
