Bears Named to CGA Academic List

BERKELEY – California men's gymnastics garnered postseason recognition for in-the-classroom achievements as the team placed ninth on College Gymnastics Association National Academic Team Champions rankings and five members of the squad were named to the All-America Scholar-Athletes list, the organization announced this week.

The Bears combined for a 3.127 grade point average during the 2017 season to finish ahead of Springfield. The team's finish in the top-10 is an improvement from a season ago when it earned an honorable mention on the list.

Individually, Cal's Capri Sano, Michael Rauchwerger, Nicholas Del Junco and Adam Young picked up first team All-America Scholar-Athlete honors for earning a 3.50 grade point average or higher. It is the second consecutive honor for Del Junco who was named to the second team in 2016.

Redshirt junior Nathaniel Ramil also tabbed a spot on the second team which required a 3.20 GPA or better.

"We are very proud of our academic All-Americans who serve as shining examples of what it means to be a student-athlete," said head coach JT Okada. "Continually being honored shows the priority we place on having that balance."

The recent recognition is the second year in a row that the Bears had five members named to the lists.
