BERKELEY – Both the Cal men's and women's swimming programs stand a strong chance of making a major impact on the 2017 FINA World Championships as several Golden Bears are set to represent their countries over eight days of racing in Budapest, Hungary.

A number of Team USA's biggest stars at the 2016 Rio Olympics will again be in action for the United States this summer. Three-time Olympic gold medalist and world record holder in the 100-meter backstroke Ryan Murphy will compete in both the 100 and 200 back, while eight-time Olympic medalist Nathan Adrian will vie for more international success in the 50 and 100 freestyle. And, both will be major factors in several of Team USA's relays.

A qualifier in the 200 backstroke, Jacob Pebley rounds out the Cal contingent competing for Team USA on the men's side, and all three men will do their work under the direction of head coach David Durden, who was selected as head coach of the United States men after his training group captured nine medals in Rio.

On the women's side, two-time Olympic medalists Kathleen Baker and Abbey Weitzeil earned the right to compete for Team USA by each posting a strong showing at the Phillips 66 National Championships. Baker, who captured silver in the 100 back and was a member of the gold medal-winning 400 medley relay in Rio, is qualified to compete in all three backstroke events (50, 100 and 200) in Budapest. She captured both the 100 and 200 back at Nationals. Weitzeil will compete in the 50 free after a second-place finish at Nationals secured her spot on the United States squad. Both should factor in relays, as well.

Several of Cal's international standouts will also be in action in Budapest. Two-time Olympian Zheng Wen Quah is set to compete for his native Singapore and will swim both distances of the butterfly and backstroke in Budapest. For the women, Farida Osman will swim the 50 and 100 fly as well as the 50 and 100 free for Egypt after winning a NCAA championship in the 100-yard fly in 2017. Current Golden Bear Anina Lund (Denmark) and incoming freshman Robin Neumann (Netherlands) will also compete in the 800 free relay.
