Celtics Pick Up Jabari Bird

BROOKLYN – The Bird basketball legacy lives on as California standout Jabari Bird joined his father, Golden Bear great Carl Bird, as an NBA Draft pick. The younger Bird was selected by the Boston Celtics with the 56th overall pick in the second round of Thursday's 2017 NBA Draft from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Bird's father enjoyed a stellar two-year career with the Bears before he was picked up by the Golden State Warriors in the fifth round of the 1976 NBA Draft.

Bird joins Ivan Rabb (35th, Memphis Grizzlies via trade with Orlando Magic) in this year's draft class, marking the first time in school history that two Golden Bears were chosen in the same draft in back-to-back seasons. In 2016, the Boston Celtics chose Jaylen Brown at third overall and the Utah Jazz picked up Tyrone Wallace with the final selection of the draft.

Though his early collegiate career was hampered by injuries, Bird emerged as a key leader for the Bears as an upperclassmen. He averaged more than 12 points over the last two seasons, including a team-best 14.3 points this year, churning out eight 20-point games and 19 double-figure outings. He logged 65 treys to take eighth among Cal's single-season record holders. Bird was named an All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention.

The Vallejo, Calif. native capped off his Cal career ranked 25th all-time for total points (1,227), fourth in career three-point attempts (504) and fifth for three-pointers made (187).

Bird, who came to Cal as a McDonald's All-American, graduated with his bachelor's degree in legal studies last month.
