Rabb Headed To Memphis As NBA Draft Pick

BROOKLYN – "Oakland's Own" may soon be calling Memphis home. Golden Bear standout Ivan Rabb, from nearby East Oakland, was selected 35th overall by the Orlando Magic in the second round of the 2017 NBA Draft held at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. on Thursday evening, with his rights awarded to the Memphis Grizzlies.

A 6-11 forward, Rabb postponed his NBA Draft fate to return to school for his sophomore campaign, citing his desire to continue improving at the collegiate level and spend more time on campus among the reasons to stay. He opened his second year as an AP Preseason All-American and despite facing constant double teams, Rabb emerged as one of the nation's elite power forwards to be considered among the top 10 for the Karl Malone award. Rabb was named first team All-Pac-12 after leading Cal in double-doubles (17), rebounds (324, 10.5 rpg), field goals (151) and free throws (124) while averaging 14.0 points per game.

Rabb's 324 rebounds and 10.5 rebounds per game last year place him at sixth in the Cal record books for single-season marks.

As a rookie, Rabb set a school freshman record with 291 rebounds and ranked second in the Pac-12 in field goal percentage. He led Cal in rebounding (8.6 rpg), blocks (42) and double-doubles (11) to claim second team All-Pac-12 and Pac-12 All-Freshman laurels.

He left Cal ranked among the top 10 in school history for his career rebounding average (tied for 6th, 9.5 rpg), field goal percentage (8th, .554) and blocks (9th, 73).

Rabb joined the Golden Bears alongside 2016 third overall pick Jaylen Brown and Roman Davis as Cuonzo Martin's first recruiting class. He was a consensus top 10 prospect and both a McDonald's and Jordan Brand All-American. The Bishop O'Dowd standout claimed a state championship in Haas Pavilion during his senior season.
