BERKELEY – California men's basketball boosted its incoming class with the signing of guard Deschon Winston, head coach Wyking Jones announced today.
 
"Deschon is the quintessential Cal student-athlete. His dedication to the game of basketball and in the classroom is very evident," Jones said. "I'm very excited to have him as part of our Cal family. He's always working to improve his game and the sky is the limit for how good he can be."
 
The 6-2 point guard from Southern California helped lead Birmingham High School to its first-ever City Section Open Division Championship this year, scoring 19 points in the title game to down Westchester, a 13-time championship game winner. The Patriots fell in the Southern California Open Division first round to end their season, going 27-4 overall and winning the West Valley League. Winston averaged nearly 18 points while added 5.1 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 2.2 steals.
 
Earlier this year Winston put up 43 points against Heritage Christian, shooting 17-22 from the floor, including a 5-7 mark from beyond the arc.
 
He was named an All-City guard as a junior.
 
Winston is the first offeree to commit under first-year head coach Jones and will join Wooden Award High School Player of the Year Juhwan Harris-Dyson, Grant Anticevich and Justice Sueing in the incoming rookie class. Utah product Trevin Knell, who signed with the Bears last November, will defer to serve a two-year LDS Church mission immediately following high school graduation and will reclassify to the 2019 class.
