SUGAR GROVE, Illinois – The Cal women's golf team braved the elements on Friday morning to complete the first round of stroke play at the 2017 Division I Women's Golf Championships. Battling cold, windy, and wet weather, the Bears are 15th after shooting a 319 (+31) in the opening round of play. The top 15 teams after Sunday's third round will advance to a final 18 holes of stroke play on Monday to determine the eight teams that qualify for match play.

Northwestern, who teed off later in the afternoon, leads the field at 12-over (300) while Purdue's August Kim and Michigan's Elodie Van Dievoet are tied atop the individual leaderboard at even par (72). Marthe Wold was Cal's top performer on the day and is tied for 11^th after shooting 5-over (77).

Wold helped the Bears qualify for nationals by finishing tied for 11^th at the NCAA Regional in Albuquerque, her best result of the season. The junior from Sandnes, Norway carried that momentum to the Midwest, shooting 2-over on the back nine as Cal opened the morning on the 10^th hole paired with Baylor and Texas.

Fellow upperclassman Lucia Gutierrez is also in the top 50 after shooting 7-over (79). Gutierrez, who graduated on Saturday with a degree in economics, improved her performance after making the turn, shooting 3-over on the final nine holes of the day.

Freshman Maria Herraez opened at 2-over on the back nine and ended the day T57th (80; +8). Marianne Li and Jiyoon Jang also battled the elements today for the Bears and sit T97th and T122nd, respectively, on the leaderboard.

Cal will be paired with Baylor and Texas again in Saturday's second round, teeing off at 10 am PT on the front nine. Live stats are available at www.golfstat.com.
