Bears Continue Play In Second Round

SUGAR GROVE, Illinois – After Saturday's round was washed out due to rain, the Cal women's golf team took advantage of the improved conditions on Sunday, dropping 13 strokes in the second round of the 2017 Women's Division I Golf Championships at Rich Harvest Farms. The Golden Bears (+49; 319+306=625) are tied for 14th with the final 18 holes of stroke play to be completed on Monday, May  22.

The stroke play portion of the NCAA Championships was reduced from 72 to 54 holes after severe weather hit the are Saturday morning and continued throughout the day. Following Monday's final round, the top eight teams will advance to the match play quarterfinals. The individual medalist will be crowned Monday as well.

Wake Forest's Jennifer Kupcho leads the individual race at even par (74+70=144) while Northwestern leads the overall team standings at +23 (301+298=599). Cal is six strokes back of Miami (+43; 316+303=619) who currently holds the eighth and final spot for the match play competition.

After Saturday's rainout, the Bears returned to the course at Noon CT, teeing off on the front nine with Texas and Baylor.

Freshman Jiyoon Jang came out of the gates strong, shooting even on the front nine and ending with a 75 (+3) for the round, Cal's lowest score of the day. The freshman from Rancho Mirage, California, dropped 13 strokes from Friday's first round, competed in cold and windy positions.

Junior Marthe Wold is the Bears top performer so far at Nationals, tied for 23rd in the individual standings. Wold shot 4-over (76) on the day, closing the round with a birdie on the 18th hole.

Sophomore Marianne Li, who finished 58th at the 2016 NCAA Championships while competing as an individual, also shot a 76 on Sunday and followed suit, capping the day with a birdie.

Senior Lucia Gutierrez ended the day with a 79 (+7), moving to T59th while freshman Maria Herraez is tied for 75th after shooting 8-over (80) on Sunday.    

The Bears will tee off on the front nine tomorrow at 5:51 am PT, paired with Furman and North Carolina. Live stats are available at www.golfstat.com.
