Record 7 Teams Earn APR Recognition
BERKELEY – A record seven California intercollegiate athletic programs – all with scores of 1,000 in their latest multiyear Academic Progress Rate scores – have earned Public Recognition Awards from the NCAA for their exceptional results in the classroom.
Â
Those receiving the honor are women's golf, women's gymnastics, women's lacrosse, men's and women's tennis, volleyball and men's water polo. The Golden Bear men's tennis team is receiving the national notice for the eighth year in a row, while the women's tennis team's streak extends to seven consecutive years. Volleyball is being recognized for the fifth time in its history. Cal's seven NCAA-recognized teams ties for the second most in the Pac-12.
Â
Cal has had at least three teams receive special recognition in seven of the last eight years, including a prior best of five in 2008-09. Overall, 11 different programs have earned the honor a total of 33 times since the NCAA began acknowledging teams in 2004-05.
Â
Each year, the NCAA honors selected NCAA Division I sports teams by publicly recognizing their latest multiyear Academic Progress Rate. These teams posted multiyear APRs in the top 10 percent of all squads in each sport.
Â
The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance. The most recent APRs are multiyear rates based on scores from the 2012-13, 2013-14, 2014-15 and 2015-16 academic years.
Â
Multiyear APRs for all Division I teams, including the teams receiving public recognition, will be announced Wednesday, May 10.
