Golden Bears Scrimmage 95 Plays For Second Straight Saturday

BERKELEY – Cal continued to emulate its in-season game week routine during the third week of its 2017 training camp that wrapped up Saturday with a competition day as the Golden Bears held a scrimmage of approximately 95 plays at California Memorial Stadium. Cal will be off Sunday before returning to practice Monday. Highlights from a busy third week including Saturday's scrimmage are captured in reverse chronological order below.

Saturday

• Cal continued to change up its Saturday competition day routines to plan for different game-like scenarios with a third different practice start time
• The Golden Bears took their emulation of gameday routines a step further by spending the previous night in the team's home gameday hotel and going through their pre-game routine including a Saturday morning bus ride to the stadium as a team before kicking off the scrimmage
• The defense continued to come up with takeaways at a high rate with five during the scrimmage on four interceptions from Marloshawn Franklin, Quentin Tartabull and Raymond Davison III, who returned his for six points, as well as a fumble recovery by Jordan Kunaszyk when Gerran Brown caused Demetris Robertson to cough up the football
• In addition to the five turnovers the defense recorded six sacks led Russ Ude's 2.0, while Hamilton Anoa'i, Brown, Devante Downs, Chris Palmer and Tevin Paul each had 1.0
• The defense held the offense scoreless on 13 of 19 possessions while allowing four touchdowns and two field goals
• The defense did not allow a point on each of the first seven possessions of the scrimmage and without a touchdown for each of the first 10 series before Ross Bowers found Kanawai Noa for an 18-yard score on the 11th possession
• The offense scored for a second straight possession when Bowers hit Demetris Robertson for a 74-yard touchdown pass three plays after he found Noa that was the longest play of the scrimmage three plays after he found Noa
• Bowers finished the scrimmage 8-of-12 for 162 yards with the two passing touchdowns and picked up another score on his feet with a 1-yard TD run
• McIlwain and Jeremiah Hawkins connected for a 14-yard touchdown on the final play of the scrimmage for the other score
• McIlwain finished the scrimmage 13-of-21 for 119 yards and the scoring throw
• Noa (8-88, TD), Robertson (4-86, TD) and Hawkins (4-63, TD) were the team's top three receivers
• Gabe Siemieniec (37 yards) and Chris Landgrebe (31 yards) each made a field goal while Siemieniec also missed one from 47 yards

• Head coach Justin Wilcox, Davison and Noa spoke to the media after practice

Friday

• The Bears loaded the buses for a short trip to their team hotel after a light practice followed by a walk-through
• Freshmen and newcomers held a meet and greet session with members of the media

Thursday

Wednesday
