Bears Shut Out Sooners

BERKELEY – Junior forward Miranda Nild kept her scoring streak alive, scoring in her fourth consecutive game to lead the 17th-ranked Cal women's soccer team to a 2-0 win over Oklahoma on Friday afternoon at Edwards Stadium. Nild netted the game-winner in the 39th minute and freshman Emma Westin added an insurance goal in the 90th minute to help Golden Bears (6-1-0) remain unbeaten at home this season. The Sooners (2-5-1) played with 10 women for the majority of the match after defender Madeline Brem received a red card in the 11th minute.

Cal outshot Oklahoma 21-4 on the afternoon, including a 7-0 advantage in shots on goal. Goalkeeper Emily Boyd and the Bears defense earned their third shutout of the season and have allowed just one goal in the last 379 minutes of action. It was the 29th career shutout for Boyd, who is now on the verge of becoming just the eighth goalkeeper in Pac-12 history with 30 career shutouts.

The first meeting ever between the Sooners and Golden Bears saw plenty of excitement early, as Brem was awarded a red card in the 11th minute after a tackle on Cal forward Abi Kim. Down to ten players for the remainder of the match, the Sooners remained active and forced Boyd off her line numerous cross and free kick opportunities.

Cal finally broke through in the 39th minute when freshman picked up the ball on the left wing and got end line, finding Nild at the penalty mark. The junior from Castro Valley took a few touches and fired from 10 yards out, beating Oklahoma goalkeeper McKinley Crone to the bottom corner. After scoring just three goals in 39 games entering the season, Nild has four goals in six appearances this season, including two game-winners. Nild is the first Golden Bears since 2014 to score in four consecutive matches and is now tied with Kim for the team lead in goals this season. It was the third assist of the season for Clark, a freshman from Lafeyette, California, who leads Cal with three helpers on the year.

Taking a halftime lead for just the second time this season, the Golden Bears continued to utilize their man-up advantage in the second half, holding a 3-1 edge on corner kicks. Cal put the game away for good when Westin scored her first collegiate goal with less than 30 seconds left to play. The freshman from Sweden pressured the Sooners defense in the box, pouncing on a back pass to McKinley and slotting it away calmly from close range. Westin, who assisted Kim on Cal's first goal of the 2017 season, is the fifth different player to score for the Bears this season and the second freshman to do so.

With the win, the Golden Bears have now won 15 consecutive home games in non-conference play, a streak that dates back to the 2014 season. Cal is a perfect 4-0-0 at home this season.

The Bears will put that perfect home record to the test on Sunday, hosting No. 14 Oklahoma State at 11 a.m. PT at Edwards Stadium. The Cowgirls entered the weekend 7-0-1, taking on San Francisco at 7 p.m. PT on Friday night. This will be the Golden Bears' second game against a Top-25 opponent this season, beating No. 24 Santa Clara, 2-1, on August 20.
